How to Do an SEO Audit: A Step-by-Step Guide for 2026

An SEO audit is a health check for your website. The goal is simple: find the things stopping your pages from ranking and fix them in order of impact. You do not need expensive tools to start, and you do not need to fix everything at once. This guide walks through the exact steps I use, in the order that matters.
What an SEO Audit Actually Is
An SEO audit reviews four areas: technical health (can Google crawl your site?), on-page basics (does each page target the right keyword?), content quality (does it answer the searcher?), and backlinks (do other sites vouch for you?). A good audit ends with a prioritized list, not a 50-page report nobody reads.
Step 1: Check Indexing and Crawlability
Before anything else, confirm Google can see your pages. Open Google Search Console and look at the Pages report. You want to know three things: how many pages are indexed, how many are excluded, and why.
Common reasons pages are not indexed: noindex tags left on by accident, robots.txt blocking important paths, canonical tags pointing to the wrong URL, and thin or duplicate pages Google decides to skip. Fix the accidental blocks first, they are usually quick wins.
Also check your sitemap.xml is submitted and clean. Every URL in it should return 200, not 404 or redirected.
Step 2: Run a Technical Health Check
Technical SEO is about removing friction. The four checks that move the needle most:
- Mobile-friendliness: Use Google's Mobile-Friendly Test. If text is too small or content overflows, fix the layout.
- Page speed: Check Core Web Vitals in Search Console. Large images, render-blocking scripts, and slow hosting are the usual culprits. Read our website speed optimization guide for fixes.
- HTTPS: Every page should load over HTTPS with no mixed-content warnings.
- Broken links: Crawl the site with a free tool and fix or remove internal 404s. They waste crawl budget and frustrate users.
Step 3: Review On-Page Basics
For each important page, confirm the basics are in place. This is the foundation covered in detail in our on-page SEO guide:
- One clear
<h1>that matches the page's main keyword. - A unique title tag (under 60 characters) and meta description (under 155) per page.
- Descriptive image alt text, not keyword-stuffed.
- A logical heading structure (h2, h3) that reads like an outline.
- Internal links from related pages using descriptive anchor text.
The single most common on-page mistake I see: multiple pages targeting the same keyword. If your SEO services page and a blog post both fight for "seo services in india", pick one as the canonical and point the other at it.
Step 4: Audit Content Quality and Gaps
For your top pages, ask: does this answer the searcher's actual question, and does it answer it better than what currently ranks? If a page is thin (under 300 words of real value), outdated, or off-topic, decide whether to improve, merge, or remove it.
Look for content gaps too. If competitors rank for questions you have no page for, those are opportunities. Start with keyword research to map demand before writing.
Step 5: Look at Backlinks
Backlinks are votes of confidence. Use a free backlink checker to see how many domains link to you and which are low quality. Disavow obvious spam. Then focus on earning links through useful content and outreach, not buying them. Buying links risks a penalty that is far harder to recover from than building links slowly.
How to Prioritize What You Find
Not every issue matters equally. I sort findings into three buckets:
- Fix now: indexing blocks, broken important pages, missing title tags on money pages.
- Fix next: speed improvements, content updates, internal linking.
- Fix later: nice-to-haves like minor duplicate content or low-priority broken links.
This stops you from drowning in a long list and ensures the highest-impact fixes ship first.
How Often Should You Audit?
A full audit every quarter is plenty for most sites. Run a quick check (indexing, Search Console errors, top page speed) monthly. If you publish often or have a large site, audit more frequently.
If running a full audit feels overwhelming, I offer a free SEO audit that covers the essentials and gives you a clear, prioritized action list, no obligation.
