Gemini is not a separate internet. It is Google's model, and when it answers questions about businesses it leans heavily on the same signals Google Search already uses: what is indexed, what ranks, what sits in the Knowledge Graph, and what appears in AI Overviews. That makes Gemini both easier and harder than the other assistants. Easier, because work you have already done for Google counts. Harder, because you cannot treat it as an isolated channel with its own trick.

Quick Answer: How Do You Get Recommended by Gemini?

Be clearly understood by Google first. That means a crawlable, indexable site, consistent business facts that match your Google Business Profile, Organization and Person schema, and content that answers real questions directly. Gemini recommends businesses Google can confidently resolve as entities. Nothing guarantees a recommendation.

Why Gemini Is Different From ChatGPT

ChatGPT can recommend a business purely from what it read across the open web. Gemini is grounded in Google's index and its understanding of entities. If Google has a thin or confused picture of your business, Gemini inherits that confusion. If Google has a clear one, Gemini has something solid to draw on. So the first question is not "how do I optimize for Gemini" but "does Google actually understand who I am".

This is also why a business can rank on page one and still not be recommended. Ranking a page and resolving an entity are related but not identical. Gemini needs the entity, not just the ranking.

Step 1: Make Sure Google Can Resolve You

Check the foundations that feed everything Google does:

  • Your key pages are indexed. Confirm in Google Search Console, not by assumption.
  • Your business name, address, and phone are identical on your site and your Google Business Profile.
  • Organization and Person schema are present and valid, with sameAs pointing to your real profiles.

For local businesses this matters even more, because Gemini answers local questions using the same local signals as Google Maps. A neglected or inconsistent profile quietly removes you from those answers. Read how local businesses can improve AI search visibility.

Step 2: Align With AI Overviews

Google's AI Overviews and Gemini draw on overlapping source selection. Pages that get cited in AI Overviews tend to be the same kind of pages Gemini trusts: direct answers near the top, clear headings, and factual statements rather than slogans. If you want Gemini to describe your services accurately, write them the way you would write for an AI Overview. Our Google AI Overviews SEO work and the AI Overviews SEO guide cover that structure in detail.

Step 3: Be Specific About What You Do

Gemini answers specific questions, so vague positioning gets skipped. "Digital marketing agency" matches everything and therefore nothing. "SEO and Google Ads for clinics in Madhya Pradesh" gives the model a category, a service, and a geography to attach to you. State that specificity on your service pages in the first paragraph, not buried in a paragraph halfway down.

Step 4: Test Gemini Directly

Ask Gemini the questions your customers ask and compare the answer with what Google shows. Three things to record:

  1. Whether you are named at all.
  2. Whether the facts are right, especially location and services.
  3. Whether the answer mirrors your AI Overview citations or diverges from them.

When Gemini is wrong, fix the source Google reads, not the symptom. Correcting a fact on your site while leaving it wrong on your Google Business Profile just creates the conflict Gemini has to guess its way through. See how AI search handles conflicting information.

What Carries Over From Ordinary SEO

Most of what helps Gemini is ordinary good SEO: fast pages, clean indexing, consistent NAP, and content that answers the question. There is no separate Gemini tactic that bypasses this. Businesses that chase a Gemini-specific shortcut while their Google foundations are weak are optimizing the wrong layer. The model can only recommend what Google can already resolve.

What This Cannot Do

No amount of optimization guarantees Gemini will recommend you. Google decides what its model surfaces, and that changes. The realistic goal is to be a clearly resolved entity with accurate, specific, well-structured content, so that when Gemini answers a question in your category you are eligible to be named rather than invisible by default.

If you want to know where you stand, an AI search audit checks whether your site is retrievable and parseable by AI systems, and our AI SEO services build the foundation Gemini depends on. A free consultation is the simplest place to start.
